Real Madrid 2 – Barcelona 0
Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup in some style on Wednesday evening at the Bernabeu.
A 2-0 win thanks to goals from Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema did the damage for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
But, it could have been a lot worse for Barcelona who were outplayed throughout.
The Asensio opener was stunning in its execution and the surprising going into half-time was that Real Madrid only scored one more in a dominant opening 45.
Karim Benzema made Samuel Umtiti look silly but Barcelona simply never got in the game.
Leo Messi cuts a forlorn figure
For Leo Messi, it was a frustrating night at the Bernabeu as Barcelona’s summer woes look to have continued.
Messi failed to gain much support from the Barcelona midfield and Luis Suarez’s patchy form continued.
The Argentine superstar clipped a shot onto the post in the second half, but generally cut a forlorn figure.
It was a far cry from Messi’s last appearance at the Bernabeu where he produced one of the all time great El Clasico performances. And, that shirt off celebration.
Leo Messi v Sergio Ramos
In the second half, Messi was involved in an incident with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos that belied his laid back nature.
Messi won a foul off Ramos, and the Real Madrid defender picked up the ball and only threw it to Messi following a delay.
Pretty standard behaviour in football matches around the world, at all levels, especially from the side winning and in control.
However, Ramos appeared to belittle Messi, arguably the greatest player of all time.
“La Concha de tu madre”
From a Real Madrid perspective, their fans must have loved Ramos’ actions.
Messi meanwhile shouted at Ramos: “La Concha de tu madre”.
This is a very common phrase to abuse someone with in Argentina. Literally it means: f*** you, your mother’s c***.
The majority of Barcelona and Real Madrid fans have claimed the Messi v Ramos incident as a positive.
Messi showed that he cares and has no respect for the Real Madrid captain.
Meanwhile, Ramos has already established legendary status at Real Madrid and belittling Messi can’t hurt.
