2016 sponsorship earnings in sport
This week the London School of Marketing have released their findings into the 2016 Sports Marketing Power List.
This list fleshes out how much money the top earners made in the past 12 months.
In perhaps something of a surprise, Swiss tennis star Roger Federer came out in first place in the list.
Federer proved he’s still the most marketable sportsman on the planet earning an incredible £49.2m through sponsorship in 2016.
Putting that into a football context, Federer earned as much through his sponsorship deals as Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo combined.
Leo Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo
When it came to the figures for football’s two biggest stars, Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo trousered £26.2 million in the last twelve months.
As for his Barcelona rival Leo Messi, the Argentine banked £23 million.
Ronaldo, whose sponsors include Nike, Tag Heuer, Herbalife, came in at number 8 in the list, while Messi, who is backed by Adidas, EA, Gatorade, Gilette, was only 11th.
A list of the top 25 earners is below.
