Reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has this afternoon revealed that Leicester City are closing on a deal for highly-regarded Dinamo Zagreb defender Filip Benkovic.
Benkovic, a 21-year-old central defender, came up through the youth ranks of Dinamo, before breaking into the club’s first-team setup as a prodigiously-talented teen in 2015.
And the Croatian youth international has since gone from strength to strength, establishing himself as a crucial cog in the backline of the capital outfit on his way to 56 Croatian top-flight appearances, along with 13 outings between the Champions League qualification rounds and group stage, to this point in his career.
As such, despite his tender years, Benkovic has already proven himself as both a competent defender and leader, with his 6ft4 frame having seen the stopper also add a goalscoring dimension to his game.
King Power bound
Unsurprisingly, Benkovic’s massive potential has already seen him linked with a whole host of European giants, with the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan and Inter Milan all touted as potential destinations in the past.
But, as per the aforementioned report from Gianluca Di Marzio this afternoon, the Croat in fact looks all set for a move to Leicester City.
Di Marzio notes that the Foxes are pushing forward ‘with urgency’ in their bid to secure Benkovic’s signature, with a deal worth £11 million, plus a further 2 million in bonuses, set to be completed imminently.
Benkovic is set to join the likes of Danny Ward, Ricardo Pereira, Jonny Evans, James Maddison and now Rachid Ghezzal as additions to Claude Puel’s Leicester City squad this summer.
