Leicester beware: Good news for Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn

Liverpool & Ben Woodburn

The recent international break will surely never leave the memory of Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn.

17-year-old Woodburn has become an overnight hero for Wales, as he played a significant role in getting their 2018 World Cup hopes back on track.

Woodburn came to the fore last season at Liverpool. Last November he scored against Leeds United in the EFL Cup, while he made nine appearances for the Reds in all competitions in 2016-17.

In the past fortnight, Wales boss Chris Coleman leaned on his youngster, and Woodburn stepped up to the challenge.

He scored a brilliant winner for Wales in a 1-0 victory over Austria after coming off the bench in the second half.

He then repeated that feat against Moldova. This time Woodburn came off the bench to tee up Hal Robson-Kanu for a massive Welsh goal.

Woodburn v Leicester

So when will Liverpool fans get to see Woodburn in action for themselves?

With the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah at Anfield, Woodburn isn’t expected to break into Jurgen Klopp’s XI anytime soon.

But he is expected to get his chances to impress this season.

In that regard, the Times on Thursday lay out the timetable for Woodburn’s next Liverpool match:

He has yet to feature for Klopp’s side this season and enquiries to take him on loan this summer were immediately rejected.

Klopp is planning to rotate his squad and Woodburn is in line to start against Leicester City in this season’s EFL Cup in a fortnight.

Woodburn’s new Reds deal

Moreover, the Times report that Liverpool are set to hand Woodburn a bumper new deal. Readers are told:

Ben Woodburn will be handed a long-term contract by Liverpool next month as the club seek to safeguard the future of the highly rated Wales international.

Woodburn turns 18 on October 15 when he will be eligible to sign a five-year contract and discussions are expected on what will be an incentive-based agreement.
