Leeds vs Derby betting tips: Championship play-offs preview and predictions

Leeds vs Derby prediction: Leeds 2-1 Derby

After a tense affair at Pride Park, these two meet again with the victor going to Wembley.

There was never going to be much between them and the first half saw very few goalscoring opportunities.

However, just 10 minutes after the interval, Kemar Roofe’s fantastic cross was met first time by Kemar Roofe who guided it into the bottom corner.

1-0 Leeds, cue scenes in the away end.

Late on Derby thought they had a way back into the game.

Jayden Bogle appeared to be brought down by Leeds’ Harrison and Referee Craig Pawson initially pointed to the spot.

However, after consolation with his assistant Eddie Smart, a free-kick the other way was given.

1-0 it finished.

Will Leeds finish the job or will Derby book their place at Wembley?

Everything is on the line.

Leeds United vs Derby County: Who will win?

Leeds have now won all 3 meeting with Derby this season and they are 3/4 to make that four out of four.

Derby must win here if they’re to have any chance of going through but they are 18/5 to get the win they need.

A draw does the home side very nicely and that’s 11/4.

Over 2.5 goals is 5/6.

Both teams to score is 8/11.

Leeds to win and both teams to score is 5/2.

Patrick Bamford is back from suspension and will lead the line for Leeds. He is 7/2 to score first and 7/5 to score anytime.

Pablo Hernández has scored 12 goals this season. The Spaniard is also 7/2 to score first and 7/5 to make that 13.

Martyn Waghorn should be back fit for Derby. He is 7/1 to score first and 14/5 to net anytime.

Mason Mount is 12/1 to score first and 9/2 to get his 11th goal of the season.

Both Patrick Bamford and Pablo Hernández to score is 5/1.

Leeds United vs Derby County: Match preview

Can Leeds end their 15 year wait for Premier League football?

Amazingly, since losing in the Championship play-off Final to Watford in 2006, this is their first venture into the play-offs at this level.

Saturday’s win was the first time Leeds have won the first leg of a play-off semi-final tie since 1987, when they beat Oldham Athletic in the second-tier play-offs under manager Billy Bremner.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side could not quite go up automatically, finishing just 6 points behind Sheffield United.

However, they are the highest ranked side, so are the favourites to go up.

They did end the regular season in bad form, failing to win any of their last 4 games.

Many claimed this was due to fatigue but, if that is the case, it was not evident in Derby on Saturday night.

They’ve beaten Derby in all 3 meetings this season and are in the box seat for a trip to Wembley.

Will Bielsa take another step towards his Premier League dream?

Frank Lampard’s side to turn it around?

Derby have it all to do.

The Rams are once again in the play-offs and likely to once again suffer heartbreak.

Since 2013, they’ve been in the play-offs 4 times now, including last season.

12 months ago, despite winning the first leg 1-0, they went out to Fulham 2-1 on aggregate.

That was their fourth defeat in the play-offs in six seasons all of which have ended in vain.

They’ll do well to keep alive hopes of ending that run here.

None of the previous 17 teams to lose at home in the first leg of a second tier play-off semi-final have gone on to progress to the final, with Derby themselves failing to do so after losing 0-3 to Hull City in 2016.

The mountain they have to climb here isn’t quite as big as it was then but still, they face a really tough task.

Can Derby pull it off?

Elland Road

Marcelo Bielsa does not have the biggest squad in the league and is not expected to make too many changes.

Goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has quite an impressive trophy collection.

He won La Liga, the Supercopa de España, 3 UEFA Champions Leagues, 2 UEFA Super Cups and 3 FIFA Club World Cups during his time at Real Madrid.

He’s played every game bar one (which he was suspended for) since joining Leeds in January.

In front of him, captain Liam Cooper will continue to be partnered by Gaetano Berardi as Pontus Jansson is a doubt.

Stuart Dallas is expected to continue at left-back.

A midfielder by trade, Dallas has been used in 5 different positions this season.

He is filling in there because Barry Douglas is out with a medial collateral ligament knee injury.

Adam Forshaw is likely to miss out after picking up an injury in the first leg.

19 year old Jamie Shackleton, who looked really bright off the bench on Saturday, is expected to come in.

On the right, Pablo Hernández will make his 122nd appearance for Leeds.

He’d scored just 15 goals in 82 appearances before this season, under Bielsa he’s got 12 goals in 38 matches.

Kemar Roofe is injured which is a big blow.

He has scored four goals in three appearances against Derby County this season, no player has more against a single opponent in this season’s Championship (including play-offs).

Also, nine of Roofe’s 15 Championship goals this season, including on Saturday, have proved to be the match-winning strike. Only Sheffield United’s David McGoldrick (10) has scored more winning goals in the competition this season.

However, Patrick Bamford is back from a controversial two-game suspension for deceiving the referee in the infamous Aston Villa match.

Will this XI take Leeds to within 1 step of a return to the big time?

Derby County team news vs Leeds United

As for Derby, they’re going to need 11 hero’s at Elland Road.

Frank Lampard does have some potential selection issues ahead of this one but it looks like all of his big stars will be available.

Since the turn of the year, Kelle Roos has established himself as the number 1 goalkeeper ahead of Scott Carson.

It’s likely to be the same back 4 as the weekend.

Ashley Cole is expected to miss out through injury but he was unlikely to play anyway.

In midfield, Duane Holmes will keep his place ahead of Tom Huddlestone.

Ahead of them, Tom Lawrence will make up an exciting attacking trio which also contains Mason Mount and Harry Wilson.

Up front, Martyn Waghorn missed the game on Saturday through injury.

However, even if he’s not 100% fit, he’s expected to start as he looks to add to his 13 goals this season.

If he’s not fit enough to start, either Jack Marriott or veteran centre-forward David Nugent will be in the XI.

Can this side cause an upset?
