Leeds to sign Real Madrid’s Casilla for free – Guillem Balague

As per a report from Spanish journalist Guillem Balague, Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla’s imminent move to Leeds United will come in the form of a free transfer.

Real stints

Casilla, 32, came up through the youth ranks of the European champions, but, after struggling for first-team opportunities, was allowed to depart the Bernabeu for Espanyol in 2007.

The Spanish shot-stopper, capped once by La Roja, subsequently went on to make 115 league appearances during his stint at the RCDE Stadium, with his showings after establishing himself as undisputed first-choice during his final couple of seasons with Espanyol having eventually seen Real Madrid splash out 6 million Euro to secure Casilla’s return to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2015.

And the veteran has since gone on to cement himself as an important figure in Los Blancos’ squad, with his solid showings as backup to Keylor Navas having ensured that the Costa Rican always remained well rested over recent seasons.

Casilla actually started a none-too-shabby 21 La Liga fixtures over the last 2 campaigns combined, along with 3 Champions League outings.

The Courtois effect

However, Thibaut Courtois’ arrival at Real from Chelsea last summer has since seen Casilla fall to 3rd-choice in the goalkeeping pecking order at the Bernabeu.

In fact, the Spaniard is yet to make a single appearance for Real to this point in the current campaign.

‘Well done to the technical secretary of Leeds!’

As such, news that Casilla is set to depart Madrid imminently has come as little surprise.

English Championship outfit Leeds United are the club set to benefit from his arrival, with reports having mounted over recent days that the experienced shot-stopper’s move to Elland Road should be completed next week:

And, as per the aforementioned update from Guillem Balague this afternoon, Leeds’ latest piece of shrewd business on the transfer market will see the Championship leaders secure Casilla’s arrival for free:

Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post, meanwhile, has shed further light on the details of the transfer:
