Bielsa to sue Lille

The trial, scheduled for 13:00 pm local time, concerns Bielsa suing the club following his sacking for “serious fault” and he is seeking severance pay that he believes he is owed.

Lille would be faced with an enormous bill should the parties fail to reach an agreement, €18,872,958 in damages for unjustified and abusive breach of the employment contract, €129,138 in damages (reputation-related) and €30,000 in further damages.

The verdict is expected in three months’ time, although there is likely to be an appeal from the losing side.

Bielsa was fired in December 2017 with the club close to the relegation places in the league. The case revolves around the issue of whether they had the right to do so. There were two contracts signed for the appointment, one in Feb 2017, which set out all the financial and material conditions of the two year deal . It was signed by former Lille owners Gerard Lopez’s company Victory Soccer. There was a parachute clause set to pay Bielsa and his assistants in full if there was termination.

The second contract was signed in July 2017 and was the only one sent to the League office, it has no mentions of the parachute payment clause. Lille are arguing that this is the only valid contract as it was delivered to the League and they had valid reasons to dismiss the manager. The League’s legal commission referred the case to the Lille tribunal.

Bielsa is set to take his Leeds team to Arsenal on Sunday, Valentines Day. The club have had a poor record in London over the last couple of seasons and have suffered three heavy defeats there already this season.

His preparation for the game no doubt factored in today’s hearing, but his mood on Sunday may well be impacted by the outcome.
