‘Lampard wanted him out for a reason’ – Arsenal legend questions Mikel Arteta’s judgement in handing Luiz new deal

David Luiz

Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has suggested that Mikel Arteta made a mistake in rewarding David Luiz with a new contract.

Luiz pens fresh terms

Brazilian stopper Luiz’s situation in north London has proven one of the main talking points at Arsenal over the course of the last month.

The veteran of course only made the move to the Emirates last summer, in a surprise switch from capital rivals Chelsea.

To say that Luiz’s Gunners stint has thus far proven underwhelming, though, would be putting it lightly.

Steady, assured displays on the South American’s part this season have all-too often been spoiled by the type of high-profile mistakes which have plagued Luiz’s career.

The 33-year-old’s most recent display, though, saw his woes reach new heights.

After being introduced as a substitute early in Arsenal’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City last week, incredibly, the central defender was at fault for the Citizens’ opener, before giving away a penalty, and getting himself sent off.

This led to an inevitable backlash on the part of the Gunners faithful, with many having called for Luiz never to line out for the club again.

As such, it came as something of a shock when, just a week after his nightmare display at the Etihad, Arsenal announced that Luiz had put pen-to-paper on a new contract:

‘Lampard wanted Luiz out…’

And one individual who is worried that Luiz’s new deal could have negative ramifications not only for Arsenal, but the club’s manager in particular, is Martin Keown.

Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT recently, Gunners legend Keown was drawn on Luiz staying put, with a particular emphasis on Mikel Arteta’s decision to give the Brazilian another chance.

And, before voicing his belief that Luiz is simply not ‘the right man’ to lead his former side’s dressing room, Keown expressed concern that gambling on the experienced stopper turning things around could prove a costly mistake for Arteta:

‘What I’m concerned about now is the stock of the manager.’

‘I think there’s enough favour there for Arteta as a young manager to maybe get away with this one.’

‘Nonetheless, I think he should be making the right decisions for the football club and I don’t believe David Luiz is the right man to be in that dressing room.’

‘Frank Lampard took a different view when he took over at Chelsea; he wanted David Luiz out of his dressing room, for whatever reason, whether that was performance or character, I’m not sure, but he made that clear decision.’

‘Now, I think David Luiz is very lucky to be there back at Arsenal for another year.’
