Lampard reiterates support from Roman Abramovich / Penalty conundrum as Chelsea boss rethinks spot-kick taker

Roman Abramovich

Roman approves

Roman Abramovich was seen in rare attendance of Chelsea’s 4-0 win in Russia against Krasnodar. Visa issues have meant that he has been unable to travel to the UK.

However, with his club playing in his homeland, Abramovich was able to join the 11,000-strong crowd, and watch the Blues run riot.

Frank Lampard was pleased that the man who employed him was able to see his team perform so well: “To have him here is a nice bonus for myself and the squad.”

“I’m very pleased we put on what I thought was a good performance.”

“I always feel the support of the owner of the club, whether he’s here at games or not,” Lampard added. “A couple of my staff members spoke to him, but by the time I came out in the warm-up he wasn’t around.”

“We got four goals and a clean sheet in his home country, and I hope it made him happy.”

Penalty pick

Despite his side’s resounding victory, Lampard did appear to suggest that a penalty pecking order shake-up could be in order. Jorginho missed his second of the season, giving Krasnodar a glimmer of hope at the beginning of the clash. The spot-kick specialist, who enjoys a small hop, skip and jump to put off the goalkeeper, struck the post:

“Jorginho has had an incredibly successful rate of scoring penalties in his career, particularly at Chelsea,” said Lampard.

“My feeling is when you take as many penalties as he does, there can be periods when you miss one, and sometimes there can be periods where you miss one or two. I experienced that as a player.

Jorginho

“I’ve got no problem at all with his style of taking them, because of the success he’s had, and Timo Werner, I know he’s very capable to take penalties as we saw.”

“We have other players that can as well, so I’ll talk with the players afterwards to see how we move forward. But we have good penalty takers at the club.”

Werner scored a penalty in the same game, and could be in line to become the club’s first-choice from the spot over the weeks ahead.
