Lampard provides insight into Chelsea’s decision to sign Thiago Silva/Blues youngster Iling confirms departure for Juventus

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has today opened up on the club’s decision to bring in veteran defender Thiago Silva.

‘Very important for us’

Chelsea’s staggering recruitment drive continued this past Friday.

Just days after sealing the respective additions of Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr, the Blues announced that a deal had been struck for legendary stopper Thiago Silva.

In an official announcement across the club’s social media platforms, it was confirmed that the 35-year-old had put pen-to-paper on a 1-year deal at Stamford Bridge, with the option for a 2nd.

Crucially, Silva’s signing did not put a dent in the Londoners’ transfer war chest, with the Brazilian having arrived on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with PSG:

On the back of the latest reinforcement to his ever-improving squad, meanwhile, Frank Lampard today spoke out for the first time on Silva’s signing.

Chelsea’s backline of course proved a major area of weakness last season, an issue which, in the short-term at least, Silva should help to ease.

And the Blues’ boss, for one, certainly appears to be of such an opinion, with Lampard having cited the former AC Milan man’s ‘experience and leadership’ as the key factors behind the club’s decision to swoop for his signature:

‘With Thiago Silva, we are looking at a player I know very well, pretty much as we all do’, Lampard explained during an interview with Chelsea’s official website.

‘He brings great experience for us, he is still playing at a massively high level, as we saw in the Champions League final and games towards the final, so I expect him to come and bring that, bring his experience, leadership and his qualities. It is going to be very important for us.’

‘We have a relatively young squad, we saw that last year, there were games afterwards when I was probably asking for more voice and some more leadership in different ways and he brings that naturally straightaway, and also on the pitch he can help talk and be the player that he is which means affecting others. On those levels I hope he brings that.’

‘I am pretty sure he will with the qualities we know he has, so I am excited for when he joins up.’

Iling to Juve

In other Chelsea-related news, meanwhile, one of the club’s young talents has this evening confirmed his departure from southwest London.

Taking to Instagram a short time ago, Samuel Iling, a highly-regarded 16-year-old midfielder, announced his decision to move on:
