Lampard insists Thiago Silva will be ‘fantastic’ for Chelsea despite West Brom mistake

Chelsea fight back

A 10-man Chelsea side fell to defeat at Liverpool last weekend.

As a result, they were no doubt desperate to bounce back this time around, against a newly-promoted West Brom.

However, to the surprise of many, with less than half an hour on the clock on Saturday, Chelsea found themselves three goals down, following some awful defending.

To the Blues’ credit, they managed to fight back in the second-half to clinch a draw.

Goals from Mason Mount, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham ensured that Chelsea did not return to London empty-handed.

Highlights: West Brom 3 – Chelsea 3

Lampard backs Silva

Regardless, though, Frank Lampard and co. will no doubt feel that their trip to the Hawthorns resulted in two points dropped, rather than one gained.

This is especially the case given the nature of the goals which Chelsea conceded.

Marcos Alonso, unsurprisingly, played a role in two of the goals conceded by the Blues.

But for West Brom’s 2nd of the day, the majority of the blame must be pinned on Thiago Silva, whose failure to control a simple pass led to Callum Robinson getting through on goal.

Given the fact that Silva was brought in to shore up a shaky Chelsea backline, the Brazilian’s high-profile mistake no doubt proved something of a concern for the club’s fanbase.

However, speaking after the clash, Frank Lampard was quick to defend the 36-year-old, voicing the opinion that Silva will prove to be ‘fantastic’ for Chelsea:

“He is going to be fantastic for us.

“He has been incredible in his career and I am sure he will be open about his mistake, but there is no blame on him.

“We are team that has to react around that. It is nothing on him. He will admit his mistake, but that was the only one. That’s his first Premier League game done and in the bank.

“He will show a lot more as he gets fitter and the whole squad gets fitter.

“I am not blaming the players but just stating facts we made mistakes to give ourselves a mountain to climb.”
