Lampard hoping to inspire Chelsea to ‘do something special’ vs Bayern Munich

Bayern vs Chelsea

Chelsea are set to take on Bayern Munich later today in the second of two Champions League last-16 meetings.

Find out how to watch the game here.

The sides first faced off at Stamford Bridge back in February, with Bayern having come out deserved victors.

The German powerhouse outclassed Chelsea, and eventually earned a 3-0 win.

A Serge Gnabry brace over the space of three minutes was followed up by a 76th-minute strike from Robert Lewandowski.

‘We will need to get our game absolutely spot on’

This result, of course, puts the Blues at a major disadvantage heading into Saturday’s 2nd-leg.

Chelsea will also be without six first-team players for tonight’s clash.

Whilst Chelsea advancing to the quarter-finals of the Champions League now looks extremely unlikely, though, all hope is not lost.

The Londoners will no doubt take inspiration from Liverpool’s semi-final meeting with Barcelona last season, in which the Reds overturned a three-goal deficit to reach the competition’s final.

Frank Lampard, meanwhile, is one man who certainly doesn’t appear to have given up all hope of causing a huge upset.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the English tactician attempted to explain what his side must do to stand a chance of emerging victorious vs Bayern, whilst also assuring that he will try to inspire his players to do ‘something special’:

“Historical turnarounds in football don’t matter. It’s about what the players do on the day. I will try and be very positive with them and try and inspire them to do something special, but we have to work first and foremost and approach the game in the right way.

“All guns blazing or keep it tight, that’s not exactly the conversation. We have to get our game right for the game as a whole. We’ll have to respect their ability on the ball and defend very well. We didn’t defend well enough at Stamford Bridge which is why we conceded three goals in a short space of time.

“We have to trust if we move the ball well and play confidently we can cause most teams problems. We will need to get our game absolutely spot on to compete and try and turn this around.”
