Jurgen Klopp singles out one Liverpool player for praise after Newcastle

Liverpool 2 – Newcastle United 0

Liverpool kept up their ambitions to finish in second place in the Premier League with a win over Newcastle at Anfield.

Rafa Benitez had a rough return back to Liverpool as Newcastle never looked capable of winning the game.

Mohamed Salah joined Harry Kane on 24 Premier League goals when he broke the deadlock against the Magpies in the first half.

Salah’s goal took him on 32 for the season; that’s more than Luis Suarez ever scored in a single campaign for the Reds.

Sadio Mane killed the game in the second half from a Roberto Firmino assist.

Jurgen Klopp singles out Loris Karius

Much has been made of the quality of Liverpool’s keepers this season.

In recent months, Jurgen Klopp has made it obvious that Loris Karius is the current number one at Anfield.

The German stopper ha repaid the faith shown in him by his manager with a string of good performances.

Against Newcastle, Karius produced a brilliant one handed save to deny Mo Diame at the end of the first half.

Klopp praised Karius after the game:

(The save was) very, very important. Newcastle would have said perfect moment for them to have scored it, it would have been the opposite for us… It was like scoring. He’s an outstandingly skilled goalkeeper.

If he’s not a good goalkeeper, I would be the biggest fool in world football to line up with him. Maybe some people think I am! He just needed time, the situation, the training… Now he’s playing and playing well.

Will Liverpool go out and look for a new goalie in the summer?

Roma and Brazilian number one Alisson has been earmarked as a Liverpool target. But will the Reds pay top dollar, around 90 million euros, on a keeper?

Newcastle savaged on BT Sport

When it came to picking apart Newcastle’s performance, Steven Gerrard went after the Magpies.

He accused Newcastle of having a Championship side in the Premier League.

Mo Diame was also singled out for not running hard enough.
