Klopp explains how Mo Salah has sustained his success at Liverpool

Salah continues to impress

Since returning to England in 2017, Mohamed Salah has firmly cemented himself as one of the most feared attackers in European football.

The Egyptian’s first season back in the UK saw him net a staggering 44 goals, as well as providing 16 assists, in 52 outings across all competitions.

The 28-year-old has been unable to reach such impressive heights in the seasons that have followed, but he has nevertheless proven a quality asset for Liverpool.

Salah scored 27 and assisted 12 in 52 outings in 2018/19, as Liverpool clinched their 6th Champions League title.

The pacey forward then netted 23 and provided 12 assists last time out, as the Merseysiders were crowned Premier League champions for the first time in their history.

Salah has had a similarly prolific start to the current campaign, netting a hat-trick vs Leeds in Liverpool’s season opener.

Klopp on Salah

Ahead of that tie, Jurgen Klopp has been speaking about Salah, and his stint at Liverpool.

When drawn on how his star attacker has managed to sustain his success over the last three years, the German stated:

“First and foremost, he deserves credit for that.

“A lot of things that we do help him to be the player he can be, that’s true, as a team, and he knows that. But apart from that, you have to have a specific personality just to invest so much – and, by the way, he’s really not the only one in the squad who is doing it, but he is doing it as well.

“You asked the right question: he scored around 40 goals in his first season and quite a few players would say that’s nice and now let’s think about other things [and] about how we can make life even more beautiful but not life on the football pitch, the other part of life, and he is exactly the opposite.

“He stayed greedy, he stayed very determined. His work-rate around the games is exceptional, he is super professional, that’s the truth. And if you would write a book about how to stay successful, the training things he is doing and we are doing between the games, that’s one key.”
