Kingsley Coman plus Juventus & Barcelona wingers linked to Old Trafford after Jadon Sancho’s transfer collapses

Jadon Sancho’s transfer to Manchester United collapses

Will Jadon Sancho play for Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday as the 2019-20 Bundesliga runners-up gear up for the new season?

Sancho was part of Dortmund’s squad that jetted off to Switzerland this week, to begin their pre-season schedule.

Today, BVB are scheduled to play Austrian side Rheindorf Altach in their first warm-up game of the summer.

For months, Sancho has been linked with a possible move to Manchester United. However, in recent days, Dortmund have claimed that there’s no chance the English international will move to Old Trafford.

BVB’s Michael Zorc has attempted to draw a line under the ‘Sancho to Man United’ story this week:

Could Man United resurrect the deal to sign Sancho?

Right now this appears to be anyone’s guess.

While Borussia Dortmund clearly want the transfer saga to go away, rumours still swirl that the deal may happen.

Indeed, in recent hours, reports have continued to circulate that Sancho has a deal in place with Man United, in the hope that the clubs manage to reach an agreement over a transfer fee.

Bayern’s Kingsley Coman plus Juventus & Barcelona wingers on Man United’s transfer radar

Yet, while some are still peddling the possibility of Sancho joining the Red Devils, others are considering which alternative players could join Man United as they look to sign a winger this summer.

In the Times on Wednesday, readers are told:

United remain hopeful that the (Sancho) deal can be resurrected but do have alternative targets including Ousmane Dembélé, the Barcelona forward, Kingsley Coman of Bayern Munich and Juventus’s Douglas Costa.

We’ll consider the likelihood of each of these possible targets below.

Kingsley Coman & Man United

24-year-old Kingsley Coman is currently gearing up for Bayern Munich’s Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona on Friday night in Portugal.

Coman has only just returned to training after a muscular problem.

In recent days, the Evening Standard suggested that Man United could sign Coman on a loan deal. Readers were told:

United could explore a loan option for Coman if they put Sancho on the backburner for another window, but it is understood Bayern would rather sell the 24-year-old outright.

Coman is under contract at Bayern until 2023. Accordingly, the Bavarians appear to be in a strong position to retain the French international.

However, has Coman dropped down the pecking order in Munich? Next season, Coman will battle with Leroy Sane for a place in the Bayern XI.

For what it’s worth, it’s unclear if Coman would be interested in joining Man United.

Also, it should be pointed out that Coman has become accustomed to winning major honours every season. Indeed, in each of the last 8 seasons, Coman has won league titles, first with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, and of course more recently with Bayern Munich.

Juventus & Barcelona: Douglas Costa & Ousmane Dembele

Two other players being linked to Man United are Juventus winger Douglas Costa and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

Rumours linking Douglas Costa with a possible switch to Old Trafford popped up in Italian paper Tuttosport this week.

Tuttosport – which isn’t always the most accurate source – claimed that: (a) new Juve manager Andrea Pirlo is evaluating Douglas Costa’s position in the Bianconeri squad, and (b) Manchester United “remain vigilant” regarding the Brazilian’s standing in Turin.

Moreover, ESPN have reported:

Costa could be allowed to leave as Pirlo plans a rejuvenation of the squad, with midfielders Blaise Matuidi and Sami Khedira also set to depart.

29-year-old Douglas Costa is under contract at Juventus until 2022.

Meanwhile, yesterday, we reported that Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele is another possible target for Man United this summer.

Dembele, who has endured an injury-riddled stint at the Camp Nou, has just under two years remaining on his current contract. Barca, meanwhile, are understood to be open to a sale.

Why Man United deals for either Douglas Costa or Ousmane Dembele seem unlikely

Reporter Gabriele Marcotti has questioned the likelihood that either Douglas Costa or Ousmane Dembele join Man United this summer.

Speaking on ESPN on Tuesday night, the European football expert voiced his belief that the Costa and Dembele transfer stories seem to have popped up courtesy of the player’s camp, rather than Man United’s.

On Costa, the reporter noted that Juventus would love to get the Brazilian’s big wages off their books.

As for Dembele, the French wide-man hasn’t played a match since November, which leaves big question marks over his fitness.

Also, one has to assume that Barcelona would be keen to sell Dembele, as he’s failed to light up the Camp Nou on any kind of consistent basis since joining from Borussia Dortmund.

What about Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish?

Some Man United fans may be wondering why everyone’s now talking about players like Kingsley Coman and Douglas Costa.

What’s happened to all the rumours linking Man United with Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish?

Of course, Aston Villa narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the 2019-20 season.

Subsequently, rumours have spread that Villa could agree a new deal to keep Grealish in the Midlands.
