Key Real Madrid defender ruled out indefinitely

Dani Carvajal “out indefinitely”

Real Madrid have been dealt a tough injury blow ahead of their match at home to Espanyol on Sunday evening.

Spanish right back Dani Carvajal, one of the best in his position, has been ruled “out indefinitely”.

Real Madrid released a short statement on Carvajal: “Dani Carvajal has been diagnosed with a viral process infection to the pericardium. Pending evolution.”

A serious bout of flu for Dani Carvajal

This effectively translates to a serious bout of flu.

And, Carvajal needs complete rest after this infection and is now expected to be out for a month and a half at least.

Testifying to his importance in the Real Madrid squad, Carvajal has played every single minute possible for Los Blancos this season.

Enter Achrif Hakimi…

Real Madrid are now starting to look quite short of defenders going into tomorrow’s match against Espanyol.

Zinedine Zidane will be without Marcelo, Theo Hernandez and Carvajal.

With Nacho expected to play left back in place of the Brazilian, there looks likely to be a start for Achraf Hakimi.

The youngster went on Real Madrid’s summer tour so has experience of some big games.

Hakimi is 18 and is yet to play a single minute for Real Madrid’s first team.

Real Madrid looking to pressure Barcelona in La Liga

It looks set to be a busy Sunday in La Liga.

Real Madrid play last against Espanyol.

Barcelona play second on Sunday with a home match against Las Palmas at the Camp Nou.

Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona side will be looking to make it seven wins from seven versus Las Palmas.

Real Madrid trail Barcelona by seven points going into Sunday’s fixtures. Los Blancos have been poor in La Liga by their standards so far this campaign.

Los Blancos come off the back of a fine 3-1 win at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday.
