Chelsea sign Mateo Kovacic
It’s a done deal!
Chelsea have completed the signing of Mateo Kovacic on loan from Real Madrid.
Kovacic arrives a day after Chelsea broke the world transfer record on a goalie signing Kepa Arrizabalaga in a £71.6m deal.
Kovacic, the Croatian international, has been looking for a way out of Madrid due to a lack of game time.
Real Madrid are blessed with midfielders, with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro all above Kovacic in the pecking order.
Kovacic has given the following quotes to Chelsea’s website after his move:
I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club.
It is a new league for me, the beginning is always tough but I am sure the coach and my new team-mates will help me and I am looking forward to a great season.
Real Madrid & option to buy Kovacic
It’s been confirmed by the Times and others that Chelsea have failed to secure an option to buy Kovacic at the end of the loan deal.
Is that a massive mistake from the Blues?
Some may argue that Chelsea are cultivating Real Madrid’s surplus, while snubbing their own talents at Stamford Bridge.
If Kovacic does well under Maurizio Sarri, Chelsea can be back to square one in twelve months time as Real Madrid can just take the Croatian back.
Why have Chelsea preferred to turn to Kovacic when they have Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley on their books?
No offense to Chelsea fans, but Madrid signing Courtois for €35m and then loaning you Kovačić without an option to buy has got to be one of the worst trading deals in the history of trade deals.
