Key Chelsea man sweating on place in starting XI v Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea

One of the stand out games in the Champions League this week sees Chelsea head to Atletico Madrid.

The Blues won big against Qarabag in their opening game of the Champions League group stages.

Whilst Atletico Madrid were held to a 0-0 draw at Roma.

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa is set to be paraded to the Atletico Madrid fans before kick off.

Will Gary Cahill play for Chelsea at Atletico Madrid?

An intriguing selection dilemma is appearing for Antonio Conte.

On Saturday, Gary Cahill did not start at Stoke with Chelsea running out 4-0 winners.

As club captain, Cahill is expected to start every significant match for the Premier League champions.

And, at Stoke, Chelsea were without the suspended David Luiz. Cahill came on for Marcos Alonso just before the hour mark.

Chelsea did play three at the back in the centre of their defence at Stoke, with Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen picked ahead of Cahill.

Gary Cahill not been told yet about Atletico start…

On Monday, the Evening Standard report that Gary Cahill is unsure whether he will start in Madrid on Wednesday night.

According to Simon Johnson, usually a good source for Chelsea news, “Antonio Conte has not told the 31-year-old that he will be in the first XI against Diego Simeone’s side yet.”

With David Luiz set to start at Atletico, it seems likely that Andreas Christensen will drop to the bench in Spain.

And, Conte will start with Luiz, Rudiger and Azpilicueta in his three man back line to face Antoine Griezmann and co.

Or, perhaps Conte was resting Cahill at Stoke in order to bring him back into the Chelsea side for Rudiger on Wednesday night.
