Jurgen Klopp provides Virgil van Dijk injury update before Southampton

Southampton vs Liverpool

Liverpool travel to Southampton on Friday evening as the title race heats up.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently top of the Premier League with 79 points from 32 games.

However, if Manchester City win their game in hand vs Cardiff on Wednesday, they will return to the summit.

As a result, Liverpool simply cannot afford to drop any more points this campaign.

Southampton, on the other hand, sit five points above the relegation zone.

Van Dijk injury update

Heading into Friday’s clash, there were fears that Virgil van Dijk would not be able to feature.

After Liverpool’s 2-1 win vs Tottenham last weekend, van Dijk was seen with an ice pack on his leg.

Van Dijk has been a key figure in Liverpool’s defence since he left Southampton for Anfield back in January of 2018 and would be a huge miss, should he still be injured.

Luckily for Liverpool, Klopp gave a pretty positive update of VVD in his latest press conference:

“He [van Dijk] trained normal, everything OK. Yesterday we only had the second recovery session but he was involved in that.

“[I’ve] heard nothing different that he could maybe not train today. [He] looks all OK.”
