Jurgen Klopp provides updates on Alisson, Firmino & more ahead of season opener

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp this evening provided fitness updates on a trio of Reds stars, ahead of the club’s fast-approaching season opener.

Reds ravaged

Klopp and co. are of course in the process of stepping up their preparations for the 2021/22 campaign.

After giving up their Premier League crown to Manchester City in altogether disappointing fashion last time out, the Merseysiders will no doubt be raring to go upon the new term getting underway in a couple of weeks’ time.

All associated with Liverpool, though, will also be eyeing a much-needed stroke of luck this time around.

This comes with the Reds’ plans last season having been completely derailed by a frankly staggering stretch of misfortune on the personnel front.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara were all forced to sit out lengthy spells with respective injury problems.

Latest on Alisson and more

In turn, it came as little surprise when, during his latest exchange with the club’s official website this evening, Liverpool’s boss was drawn on the Reds’ personnel news.

The likes of van Dijk and Gomez are known to be inching ever closer to full fitness, ahead of the club’s Premier League season opener versus Norwich City in a little under two weeks’ time.

On Sunday, though, Klopp was pressed on the trio of Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino, all of whom lined out for Brazil at this summer’s Copa America.

‘I saw them this morning already but I spoke only a few words because they had still holidays’, the German explained.

‘They had to do the lactate test yesterday because they had to run anyway. That is how it is. They will start tomorrow with training properly with us.’

When pressed on whether his Selecao stars will be afforded sufficient time to regather match fitness ahead of facing Norwich, Klopp continued:

‘No, they never have enough time. The players who play international football never have enough time, that was always like this. This year was the best year though but they never have enough time. You never have enough time to train and stuff like this – a week, two weeks before the season.

So the Brazilians now, two weeks. I think last year it was 10 days, if I am 100 per cent right, for the first game. But nobody listens about that, nobody is interested in that – we just carry on like this and everybody expects in the end kind of perfect-tuned football teams.’

‘The good thing is in three weeks holiday you do not lose a lot,’ The Liverpool boss concluded.

‘They do not have three weeks no training – I say that every year as well. But after 10 days, they start already with training again, just not football with us. So, they are fit, they do not lose a lot and we can use them pretty quickly in the games. That is why we planned it like this. Maybe on Thursday in our two 60-minute games against Bologna we can involve them already, I do not know yet – maybe 15, 20, 30 minutes. We have to see how they look exactly.’
