Jurgen Klopp ‘must assess’ whether or not Joel Matip can start for Liverpool vs Ajax

Jurgen Klopp ‘must assess’ whether or not Joel Matip can start for Liverpool vs Ajax

Ajax vs Liverpool

The Champions League is set to return to our screens this week.

After a fairly disappointing 2019/20 campaign, English clubs will be no doubt hoping for a much better showing in Europe’s premier club competition this time around.

Perhaps the most underwhelming Premier League performer in the Champions League last season was Liverpool.

Granted, Tottenham and Chelsea were eliminated in the same round as the Reds, but, after winning the trophy the season prior, a lot of pressure was on Jurgen Klopp’s side to deliver again.

However, the Merseysiders eventually crashed out in the last-16 vs Atletico Madrid.

As a result, Liverpool will no doubt be keen to get their new Champions League campaign off to a flyer on Wednesday, when they take on Ajax.

The Premier League champions have been drawn in Group D, along with Atalanta, Midtjylland and, of course, Ajax.

Klopp to assess Joel Matip ahead of Ajax

Ajax are perhaps the toughest opponent in Liverpool’s group this time around.

So, Jurgen Klopp would no doubt love to call upon his strongest squad in Amsterdam on Wednesday.

However, recent injury woes mean that all of Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara and Alisson are expected to miss the clash.

With van Dijk sidelined, meanwhile, Liverpool currently only have Joe Gomez and Joel Matip available as senior central defenders.

However, in a major concern for the Reds, Matip now also appears to be dealing with a fitness issue.

As per Paul Joyce of The Times, the Cameroonian underwent a scan on Saturday.

And though no major issue was dejected, it is claimed that Jurgen Klopp must now assess whether or not he will utilise Matip from the off against Ajax:
