Jurgen Klopp hints at new role for Fabinho after Brighton

Brighton 0 Liverpool 1

Liverpool faced Brighton on Saturday as they looked to extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points, until Monday at least.

The Reds headed into the Brighton game on a two-game losing streak.

However, those two games came against 2nd place Manchester City and vs Wolves in the FA Cup were Liverpool played a very weak side.

Regardless, Liverpool will still have been keen to get back to winning ways vs Brighton.

The Seagulls are no pushover, especially at home and it did take Liverpool sometime to take the lead.

Mohamed Salah would be brought down inside the Brighton penalty area early in the second half.

The Liverpool forward would then step up and convert said penalty, scoring the only goal of the game.

Jurgen Klopp on Fabinho vs Brighton

While Mo Salah was once again the match-winner vs Brighton, Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for a different player post-Brighton.

Liverpool have had some serious defensive issues in recent weeks with Virgil van Dijk their only centre-back fit enough to start vs Brighton.

As a result, Fabinho was tasked with partnering the Dutchman on Saturday.

Fabinho did a superb job and helped Liverpool earn yet another clean sheet.

His excellent display also lead to Klopp hinting that Fabinho could start at centre-back more often for Liverpool, should they need him to:

“He is a brilliant player and I am happy that he can play (against Brighton). It’s now pretty clear (that he can play in defence).

“It’s not like it came one attack after the other from Brighton. We had the ball most of the time, so then it makes sense to have a good footballer in that position.

“He has a defending brain and can do it in different positions, it’s good.”

Liverpool are at home to Crystal Palace in their next game.

Given they will likely have a lot of the ball, we could once again see Fabinho start at the back vs the Eagles.
