Jurgen Klopp fears Man City ruling may lead to a 10-team World Super League & outlines Liverpool transfer plans

Jurgen Klopp fears Man City ruling may lead to a 10-team World Super League

In his press conference on Tuesday before tonight’s match against Arsenal, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had plenty to say about Man City’s victory against UEFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Klopp revealed that he’s pleased that Man City won their case, and that they’ll be playing Champions League football next season.

Why? Because if City had been banned from European football, Klopp believes Liverpool would have had little hope of beating the Citizens to the 2020-21 Premier League crown. Klopp said:

I am happy that City can play in the Champions League.

If I think about the league and City has ten to twelve games less for resting players, I don’t see any chance for any teams in the league. Honestly.

However, the Liverpool manager is also concerned about the wider implications stemming from Man City’s victory against UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules.

Has the City judgment opened the door to unlimited spending in football? Klopp fears that’s the case, and, if so, the Liverpool manager believes it’s only a matter of time before a World Super League is formed. Klopp said:

If you start allowing people not to care about it anymore and the richest people or countries can do what they want in football, that will make the competition really difficult.

I think that would lead automatically then to a kind of world super league with 10 clubs. I don’t know exactly which clubs, that depends on the name of the clubs and the people who own the clubs and then they can play against each other.

It is a little bit like Formula One, if you open the door to a private jet and you see who is quicker, the aeroplane will win. If the cars are in a specific way, then the best driver wins.

Jurgen Klopp outlines Liverpool transfer plans

Another topic raised during Klopp’s press conference on Tuesday was how Liverpool could operate in this summer’s transfer market.

Klopp raised two points.

Firstly, Liverpool have always been cautious about their levels of spending on new transfers, and that of course came before the current global pandemic.

Secondly, with that said, if funds are available, Klopp intends to use them.

The Liverpool manager said:

Buying now? Just go out and there and name whoever you want, whatever the player is, go for it? That is really difficult. It was always difficult.

We did not invest a lot in the squad last year and that was before Covid. We do not know when supporters will be back in the stadium.

Whoever knows, tell me and then we can plan with that. That is how the club has been led since before I was here.

If we have money, we will spend.

If we do not know if we will have money, we probably will not spend that much. That is how it is.
