Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool’s squad is too big

‘In this moment, the squad would be too big’

In a recent interview, Jurgen Klopp commented upon Liverpool’s current squad and he thinks that it is currently too big which could spark several players leaving the Reds before the transfer window shuts on Thursday.

“We will see what happens. If any player from my team is available, then in every other situation in my life as a manager I would have bought all of them, to be honest.

“They are all fantastic boys, they are able to play fantastic football.

“In this moment, the squad would be too big, that’s true. But it’s not that that means for us that we give them for free or something like that, Liverpool is strong enough to keep all these players and then we deal with that.

“We are not there to make other teams stronger, that’s not our job.”

Mass clearout

Klopp’s statement about Liverpool’s squad size comes on the back of The Telegraph reporting that Liverpool are set for a mass clearout this summer.

As per the report, Klopp could be set to shift on many players this summer, raising over £100m in the process.

Some of the players Liverpool could be set to sell are the underperforming Loris Karius, Divock Origi, Danny Ings, Sheyi Ojo, Lazar Markovic and Pedro Chirivella.

This is hardly surprising given that Liverpool have already brought in four fresh faces to the Liverpool squad this summer meaning departures were always likely.

New recruits

After losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final and finishing 4th in the Premier League, it was clear Liverpool needed to improve their squad this summer to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United.

And credit where credit is due, Liverpool are certainly looking to do so.

They have already agreed to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig earlier this year. The Reds would then sign holding midfielder Fabinho from Monaco for a fee of around £43 million.

Liverpool have also signed Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson from Roma but as a result, Klopp believes his squad is now too big.
