Julian Nagelsmann speaks on Man United-linked Goretzka’s contract situation

Man United offer Goretzka contract

It has been clear for a while now that Manchester United need reinforcements in midfield.

Nemanja Matic is past his best, leaving the Reds without a quality defensive midfielder.

This has led Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start both Scott McTominay and Fred in a midfield pivot.

However, this selection creates a number of problems, forcing Paul Pogba to be played out of position

Even more concerning, though, is the fact that, even when Fred and McTominay start together, United’s midfield can still look shaky at times.

So, it is evident that one of the club’s top priorities this summer should be signing a quality no.6-type player, who can sit deep and allow the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes more advanced, attacking roles.

One central midfielder to have been linked with the Red Devils of late has been Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka.

Reports stemming from Germany tipped United to move for the German last month.

It was even claimed that the Manchester giants had offered Goretzka a contract for 2022, to join as a free agent upon the expiration of his Bayern deal.

Nagelsmann on Goretzka’s contract

Landing a player of Goretzka’s quality on a free would of course mark a fine piece of business for Man United, even if they were forced to wait a year to get him.

However, new Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has now commented on Goretzka’s contract situation, and the news sounds altogether discouraging from a Man United perspective.

When drawn on the German’s future earlier today, Nagelsmann assured that he is confident Goretzka will put pen to paper on fresh terms:

‘I’m not involved enough that I have a say every day. I stay out of these issues.

‘Of course I have talked to him about my plans for him. I’ve told him I’d be happy if he extended and I’m also confident. There are several topics involved when it comes to discussing a contract extension.

‘I’ll continue to focus on the sports side of things and show him he can be one of the most dangerous midfielders in Europe. He has potential to get even better.’
