Jose Mourinho told Tottenham have no money for January transfers – Guardian

There will be no war chest

Jose Mourinho has reportedly been told that there will be no money to spend in the January transfer window, as he begins his Tottenham overhaul.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss was confirmed as Spurs’ new manager early on Wednesday morning.

Mourinho signed a four-year deal, and is set to sit in front of the press on Thursday.

Mauricio Pochettino was sacked on Tuesday evening, despite guiding Tottenham to the Champions League final last season.

Spurs of course lost to Liverpool in the showpiece, and have started the current campaign very poorly.

The Lilywhites are currently sat 14th in the Premier League table.

Now, while some may have expected that Mourinho would have the funds to overhaul his squad in January, that’s not the case at all.

Stadium repayments prevent big spending

According to the Guardian, Jose Mourinho has been told that there will be no money to spend in the next transfer window.

Daniel Levy is known to be strict with transfer spending, and that was evident when Pochettino was in charge.

According to their report: ‘José Mourinho has been told that he will have to work with Tottenham’s existing squad as there is no money for an overhaul in January.’

The reason behind this is that Spurs ‘must make big repayments on their new stadium’ and with the club sat in 14th, there are fears that they could miss out on Champions League revenue.

The Guardian’s report continues by explaining that Mourinho ‘has entered the role with his eyes open as to the financial realities at the club and it was noticeable that on Wednesday evening he talked up the players he has inherited.’
