Valencia, Fellaini and Michael Carrick
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained that his side are without three more players during the festive period, and has lamented the fact that he’s missing key stars and also that he has to cope with the fallout from the travelling after the midweek loss in the League Cup.
Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick are all out of the festive period, where of course the fixtures come thick and fast, and players can easily pick up suspensions or injuries – not to mention their fatigue.
“No timescales but not for the Christmas period.
“Of course, for the game at Bristol we changed a lot of the players, so we managed to give a rest to many of them and especially to the lucky ones that did not travel.
“Because the ones that did travel, even some who did not play, arrived back in Manchester close to 5am. People like Mata or Smalling, who were on the bench, had to travel back.”
Given their injury list it may well be the case that Jose Mourinho delves into the January transfer window – something he’s not a huge fan of – but will enter into if he feels there is no other choice for his side.
Given Eric Bailly is also set for a couple of months on the sidelines, United could be forgiven for planning on adding to their squad, and at the rate City are improving and picking up points, it seems that United and Mourinho do need to add to their side in order to compete.
The issue with the January window is of course that it’s hard to bring in world class players – yet United have the money to at least try and do so.
