Jose Mourinho reveals tactics behind signing Alexis Sanchez

Competition

Jose Mourinho has explained why he asked the Manchester United board to sign Alexis Sanchez – and thinks that the squad currently need more competition and to be pushed to perform better.

He of course wants more options as well in terms of how he sets up his side tactically, and has always made it clear two top players for each position is his mandate in terms of a squad at optimum level and given Mourinho himself has admitted this could well be the end of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the top level, come the summer, the club may look to bring in even more forward players in should the Swede leave the club as expected come the end of his contract.

Standard Sport report he said: “In this moment there is no competition for places.

“We have four attacking players for three positions, three are starting, one is on the bench.

“You look to the attacking areas and we need that extra competitive internal competition but more solutions for us so let’s see.”

Money

Plenty has been made of the money involved in the deal for Man United to land Alexis, but given Jose Mourinho asked the board to put their money where their mouth is so he can compete with Manchester City and win the league in the coming seasons, it seems the United board are backing their manager.

So much so that links with Mourinho and PSG have all but disappeared, and the manager seems set to even extend his contract with the club and once again spend big come the summer – with Michael Carrick set to retire and Mourinho keen to bolster his squad further – with more attacking options being lined up to rival the forwards in the squad.
