Jose Mourinho reveals which area Man United will strengthen this summer

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has opened up on his plans for the summer transfer market, revealing the one position that the Red Devils ‘need’ to strengthen.

Despite the January transfer window having closed less than 3 weeks ago, and Manchester United having pulled off a major coup in landing Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal ahead of rivals Manchester City, the Old Trafford outfit have nevertheless already been linked with moves for a whole host of names around Europe upon the re-opening of the transfer market in the summer.

A disappointing recent streak which has seen Jose Mourinho’s men fall to defeats to the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle, and drop a massive 16 points off the pace set by runaway Premier League leaders Man City, has seen a number of the club’s stars come under major scrutiny.

The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and more have been singled out for particularly heavy abuse over the last couple of weeks, with large sections of United’s fanbase already calling for an overhaul to their squad come the summer.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s FA Cup clash with Huddersfield this evening, Red Devils’ boss Jose Mourinho was questioned on his transfer plans for the end of the season, with the Portuguese tactician pointing to one key area that will certainly be strengthened:

‘We need to sign a midfield player because we are going to lose Michael Carrick.’

‘Of course, we need balance in the team. I told you that one or two months ago when we were speaking about the market. When some of you keep saying that we are going to buy that striker, that winger, that left winger, that right winger, I told you two months ago.’

‘You can accuse me of many, many things, but you cannot say that I lied to you. When I don’t want to say things, I don’t say. But I don’t take you in other directions.’

‘When I told you a couple of months ago that we don’t want to sign any striker or any winger and, yes, we are looking and we are going to try to sign a midfield player, I told you that two months ago.’

It remains unclear exactly which players Jose Mourinho has in mind for his side’s midfield, though United have been heavily linked with the likes of former Barcelona target Jean Michael Seri of Nice and Lazio’s 100 million Euro-rated powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
