Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed why he wouldn’t let Romelu Lukaku or Ander Herrera take the penalty against Benfica.
The Old Trafford side has the whole of social media confused following the penalty that lead to their second goal.
Danny Blind eventually took the penalty and converted but it was what happened before the penalty that had everyone confused.
Romelu Lukaku looked set to take the penalty before Ander Herrera took the ball off him ready to take it himself.
Then, Jose Mourinho ordered his players to let Danny Blind take the penalty, pushing Herrera and Lukaku to one side.
Thankfully for the Dutchman, it all worked out but it could have lead to a very embarrassing moment for Mourinho and Man United.
Now, the Portuguese boss has revealed why he wouldn’t let Lukaku or Herrera take the penalty.
“The reason is Martial was the player to take [the first penalty], he took and he missed,” he explained.
“He was not even on the pitch [for the second penalty] then the players were happy to take responsibility.”
“Romelu and Ander were happy to do it but my choice was Blind – it’s my decision.”
“We train and I analyse – I try to make the right decision.”
“In the last few days Martial didn’t miss one against three good goalkeepers but he missed – sometimes the choice is the wrong one.”
“I wanted Daley to take it. He was my choice at that moment.”
Lukaku went to take the pen. Mourinho told Herrera to stop him. Then Mourinho gestured ‘no’ to Lukaku before Blind finally took it. Weird.
