Jose Mourinho has claimed Luke Shaw has finally won him over – because of his efforts in training and on the field.
It had been thought Mourinho was desperate to get rid of Shaw, yet with the left back injured for periods of time, United never put him up for sale or loan, and it’s been up to Shaw to work his way back into Mourinho’s thinking – which he apparently has.
The United boss did a full u-turn and claimed Shaw could well be at the club for years to come now.
He said to Sky Sports: “With Luke, it is not about changing my mind.
“With Luke, it is just the evolution or no evolution of his potential. I think you say ‘fulfil the potential’ – it is just about that.
“I know Shaw since he arrived in the Premier League with Southampton and I know his potential, his quality.
“Could he come in my direction in the way I like players to be, not just on the pitch but also during the training week?
“He made a big effort. He is now, for a few months, free of these minor injuries which sometimes stop evolution and I am really happy.
“I think the natural consequence of it is he will have his contract and he will be a Manchester United player for years.”
One other player who has seen their relationship with Mourinho called into question is Paul Pogba, after being subbed and then dropped by the United boss, but Mourinho has claimed all is good on that front.
He noted that Pogba has responded well to being left out the side, and has reiterated that in his mind, a box to box midfielder is one that not only has an attacking job but also a defensive responsibility and duty to help the team, and he expects that from Pogba.
