Jose Mourinho hoping Dele Alli can follow in footsteps of Tottenham teammate Tanguy Ndombele

Ndombele back in from the cold

Tanguy Ndombele joined Tottenham last summer for a club-record fee, arriving from French outfit Lyon.

However, despite his transfer fee and previous superb displays in France, Ndombele endured a tough debut campaign in north London.

The midfielder’s fitness seemed to be a real issue for much of the season, with Jose Mourinho having even publicly hit out at Ndombele back in March.

However, 2020/21 looks as though it could well be the term in which Spurs fans finally see what Ndombele is capable of.

The 23-year-old has featured in all four of the Lilywhites’ outings thus far, including playing 90 minutes on Thursday.

Thursday’s clash with Shkendija also represented the first time Ndombele managed 90 minutes of competitive action in 2020, and appears to have signalled a real turning point in his Tottenham career.

Spurs are now set to face off with Newcastle United this coming Sunday.

And though Jose Mourinho is unsure of whether Ndombele will be up to starting a second game in the space of a few days, the Portuguese tactician was full of praise for the former Lyon standout:

“I’m very happy [with him].

“I say all the time, when a player improves it’s a player’s responsibility, it’s the player’s credit. It’s not the coach who makes the miracle. The player that does that by himself, to understand what he has to understand and go in the right direction that he has to go. Tanguy, step by step, is doing very well.”

Mourinho was also asked if Ndombele’s bounce back is what he hopes to see from Dele Alli, and others who are out of favour, to which the Spurs boss responded:

“Yes, that’s what I want.

“I don’t want players to moan, I don’t want players to feel frustrated, I don’t want players to feel that I have something against them when I don’t pick them up.

“I want players to fight for the minutes that they want to be on the pitch and when you play for Tottenham, you have to understand that Tottenham wants to be better and better and the rewards are going to be better and better and the players cannot have a comfortable position on the pitch.”
