Manchester looks odds on favourite to see the Premier League title come back this season – but the majority of people think the title will be going to the blue half.
Given the start Manchester City have had – and their summer recruitment – it’s understandable, but Jose Mourinho has a very clear reason he thinks his side will come into their own in the second half of the season – because they have a host of top quality players to come back into the side, and will even see the return of one star man, who knows a thing or two about winning titles and trophies.
He was speaking on the opening weekend of the season, and said to Sky Sports: “We are going to try to give a hard fight to the top teams in Europe in the Champions League.
And I always had respect and the desire to do well in the English cups and I always liked to go to the finals. We have a good squad – a good squad also in numbers.
“We also have people coming later – Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, maybe Zlatan (Ibrahimovic). They can still be like new players for us later in the season, so we are fine.”
The one star man who Mourinho said could well return is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been linked with the club since he was released from his contract following his injury – and it seems that Ibra himself and Mourinho both think the best thing for the player is to stay at Old Trafford.
Given his experience and the amount of goals he scored last term before his season ending injury, that doesn’t come as much of a shock – and should Zlatan come back into the fold when the Champions League is heating up and the Premier League games coming thick and fast, it could well be the added advantage United need.
