Jose Mourinho explains the big turning point for Man United this season

Defending

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has admitted he hopes his side have turned a corner this season, after their win against Crystal Palace came when they were two goals down.

He noted the poor defending that led to the goal that changed things had to be overcome – and that the attitude his players showed in the face of that gives him hope for the rest of the season – and the spirit of the side is a huge plus.

“That disgraceful, childish second goal changed everything. But the players kept an amazing attitude.

“Juan Mata was finding spaces inside, Marcus Rashford was open on the left and brought their right-back wide to give us more space in the middle.

“You always need that little bit of luck to win a match in the last few minutes. Sometimes the winner is the one who deserves the congratulations but I think Roy Hodgson did everything right.

“I cannot tell you half of the things I told my team at half-time because there would be lots of bleeping on television. But what I can say was all about the tactical positioning.

“To come back from 2-0 down away from home against a team that is desperate for points, it gives us a great feeling.

Spirit

Ahead of the huge clash with Liverpool, United are being told to resist their temptation to sit deep and defend – and play the ones who came on and changed the game against Palace.

Juan Mata may have been on the sidelines since the turn of the year, but there’s no denying he was the one who added the spark and made United tick – and given his fondness for goals against Liverpool, Mourinho may well find a way to include him.
