Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham’s Joe Rodon can become ‘much, much better’

Jose Mourinho believes Tottenham’s Joe Rodon can become ‘much, much better’

Spurs see off Sheffield United

Tottenham were in action on Sunday afternoon.

The Lilywhites headed into their latest Premier League clash in concerning form, winless in their prior three league outings.

However, Sheffield United have of course won just once in the PL this term, representing the ideal opportunity for Spurs to get back on track.

And this, in the end, is exactly what the visitors managed, courtesy of a 3-1 win.

Serge Aurier fired Tottenham into the lead inside five minutes at Bramall Lane, before Harry Kane doubled their advantage 40 minutes in.

David McGoldrick did pull one back for the Blades just before the hour-mark.

However, a sumptuous Tanguy Ndombele finish minutes later ultimately killed off Sheffield United’s hopes of a comeback.

Jose Mourinho on Joe Rodon

Following his side’s victory, meanwhile, Jose Mourinho was drawn on Joe Rodon.

The Welshman signed for Spurs over the summer, from Championship outfit Swansea.

Rodon had zero top-flight experience to his name before making the move to north London, though, and has since managed just five league appearances (two starts) for his new club.

Despite his lack of game-time, however, Mourinho is seemingly very pleased with Rodon’s development thus far, and has backed the stopper to become ‘much much better’:

“He played well, he did many things well, a couple of things not so well, but he’s a player who of course was playing in the Championship.

“A young guy, he has to learn. One thing is you want a central defender and you pay £70 million for one of the top centre-backs in Europe, then you resolve your problems.

“Another thing is to get a good player, but a player who needs to develop. With Joe, that’s the situation.

“He has to learn, he has to make mistakes, he has to play, he has to not play. We have to try to give him conditions to perform. but potentially, potentially of course, he’s a good player who can become much much better.”
