Jose Mourinho admits to ‘connection’ with Newcastle in response to Magpies post links

AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho has, on Saturday, provided his take on the speculation linking the Portuguese with the soon-to-be vacant hotseat at Newcastle United.

Ashley moves on

The subject of the bench at St. James’ Park has of course taken centre stage in the headlines over the last week.

This comes on the back of the long-speculated takeover of Newcastle finally being pushed over the line last Thursday evening, opening the door to a potentially seismic shift in the landscape of English football.

The Magpies’ new Saudi Arabian chiefs are understood to boast an eye-watering financial backing exceeding £300 billion, setting the Tyneside outfit up to be the wealthiest in world football.

‘100 per cent focused’

With a big-money spending spree no doubt on the horizon as early as January, Newcastle’s loyal fanbase, in turn, have been quick to make clear their excitement when it comes to the club’s prospects moving forward.

Amid the returning feel-good factor at St. James’, though, one individual who has in fact been dealt something of a blow by the changing of hands at the club is Steve Bruce.

On the back of widespread speculation that his position was under immediate threat following Ashley’s departure, word was forthcoming last weekend that Bruce is now ‘on the brink’ of being relieved of his spot on the bench on Tyneside.

Rumours, as a result, have since begun to fly regarding just who will be chosen by Yasir Al-Rumayyan and co. as the man to replace Bruce, and oversee a potentially prosperous new era in the North East of England.

The likes of Antonio Conte and Frank Lampard have been tipped for the post, though Everton boss Rafael Benitez has seemingly ruled himself out of the running.

And, on Saturday, another of those to have seen his name linked with the position has too moved to distance himself from such a prospect.

Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s crunch meeting with Juventus on Sunday night, AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho was this evening drawn on the possibility of taking up the reins at Newcastle.

The Portuguese, however, albeit whilst admitting to holding a ‘connection’ with both the people and city of Newcastle, was keen to assure that he remains fully committed to the ongoing ‘project’ in the Italian capital:

‘I have nothing to say about Newcastle.’

‘I worked with Mr. [Bobby] Robson [at Barcelona ], one of the greatest in the history of the club, and I have always had a connection with those people and that city that I know well by now.’

‘But nothing more. I am 100 per cent focused on the project with Roma-Friedkin project.’
