Jonjo Shelvey singled out for blame after Newcastle blew it at Bournemouth

Bournemouth 2 – Newcastle United 2

Was that the match that may have doomed Newcastle United?

Rafa Benitez’s side let a golden opportunity to win on the road slip through their fingers on Saturday.

Newcastle should have beaten Bournemouth. The Toon went 2-up in the game and it should have been three.

But Bournemouth staged a late recovery to claw back a point.

Dwight Gayle had Newcastle in the lead in the first half with a cheeky backheel against the Cherries. And Gayle capitalised on an error from Asmir Begovic to double the lead at the break.

Adam Smith gave Bournemouth hope halving the deficit, before a close range 89th minute leveller from Dan Gosling denied Newcastle the win.

A bad, bad miss from Jonjo Shelvey

When Newcastle were 2-goals up, Jonjo Shelvey had the perfect opportunity to kill the contest.

Shelvey had been excellent in the first half at the Vitality Stadium, but he let down his team mates in the second period.

Shelvey had a glorious chance to wrap up the points, but he shot wide from a Christian Atsu cross.

After the match, the Shelvey miss was cited by all as the key incident in the draw.
