Jonjo Shelvey a doubt for Newcastle ahead of trip to Wolves / Is it time for the Joelinton experiment to end?

Shelvey out?

Newcastle have had a hit-and-miss beginning to the Premier League season. Steve Bruce’s side currently sit 14th after 5 games, with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses.

The Magpies enjoyed a successful summer transfer window, bringing in Bournemouth pair Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser, Norwich City’s Jamal Lewis and Burnley’s Jeff Hendrick. Bruce has also maintained a strong loyalty to players who were already at the club.

Jonjo Shelvey has played in all of Newcastle’s league outings this season. The former Liverpool midfielder signed a new deal earlier in 2020, which will keep the England international at St. James’ Park until 2023.

However, Bruce could be without the integral 28-year-old on Sunday, with Shelvey suffering with a groin injury.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Wolves, Bruce said: “He’s had a sore groin now for the past two, three weeks – and tried to play with it. It’s come to the stage where he’s not going to be able to, but I’ve got nothing but the hugest respect for Jonjo.”

”He’s a very, very good player, and most players wouldn’t be playing with the injury that he’s played with.”

Newcastle are set to take on Wolves on Sunday the 25th of October at 16:30.

When to let go

Since the arrival of Joelinton from Hoffenheim, scrutiny aimed in the direction of the young Brazilian has proven a burden. His £40 million price-tag doubled the club’s previous transfer record, so naturally expectations were high.

However, in 43 league appearances in England, the Brazilian has scored just twice. The same concern was present before the 24-year-old signed for the Magpies. In his final season with Hoffenheim, his 28 league appearances saw Joelinton net just 7 goals – far from what could be described as prolific.

Newcastle acted upon their record signing’s struggles with the addition of Callum Wilson. The former Cherries striker has already doubled Joelinton’s league total in just 5 appearances. Playing more so on the wing than in a central role, goalscoring opportunities have been far less frequent for Joelinton of late. But with no assists, either, creativity is not exactly oozing from the Brazilian.

A time may soon arrive in which Bruce decides to cut his losses, and simply relegate Newcastle’s big-money hitman to backup duties.
