John McGinn signs contract extension with Aston Villa until 2025

McGinn signs

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has ended speculation over his future at Aston Villa by signing a new extension which sees his current contract now expire in 2025.

McGinn was a key figure in Villa’s survival in the Premier League last season and has been buoyed by the club’s activity in the transfer window this summer with Ross Barkley, Bertrand Traore and Ollie Watkins all added to the Villa attack. After a strong start to the season Villa’s form has dipped but McGinnis confident that the club is building for a strong future.

“It was an easy choice really. I have got a good relationship with everyone here, I think everyone is aware of that. We have been talking for a while now and it was an easy conversation, just one that had been parked because we had a lot of games, and a lot of international games,” said McGinn.

“With the Newcastle game getting cancelled, it was the perfect time to get it agreed and I am over the moon. The fans want people giving 100 per cent every game and I feel I can bring that. We are waiting to have a full Villa Park again.

“I’m fully aware of what it means to play for this club, what the fans want. They want people dying for the jersey and I feel I can bring that. On the whole this season has been very positive. We are building something very special here.”

Villa face Wolves in what looks to be an intriguing west midlands derby and McGinn behind talismanic Jack Grealish, Traore and Watkins.

Grealish responds

Jack Grealish has been accused of diving this season on a regular occasion and the England international did seemingly try to simulate a foul in the match against Leeds with videos of the incident circling social media.

However, Grealish has responded to the claims and was bullish in taking the criticism.

“I try and take it as a positive,” he said when asked about the frequency to which he is brought down. “There are times where it comes and it’s annoying; if you’re on the break or something and there’s a time you can set a teammate up or go yourself but someone brings you down.”

“In my position, it’s going to happen. I get so much stick on social media from opposition fans when they say I go down too easily, which at times I probably do but that’s just the player I am and the team I’m in at the moment.”

“We’re not the biggest possession-based team in the league, sometimes we’re a team that needs to slow the game down.”

Darren Bent, former Villa striker, has been defensive of Grealish in the past but was quick to admit the dive against Leeds was very ‘poor.
