Jesse Lingard reveals what the Man United fans said to him during warm-up

Manchester United smashed in their own backyard

In one of the most humiliating episodes of Manchester United’s history, the Red Devils fell to a 5-0 defeat to Liverpool in front of an angry Old Trafford crowd.

Mo Salah netted a hat-trick to add to goals from Diogo Jota and Naby Keita, with Jurgen Klopp’s side 4-0 up at half-time, before Paul Pogba saw red to make matters even worse for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

While the result is humiliating, perhaps more humiliating is the mercy that Liverpool showed at 5-0 up, opting to keep the ball rather than attack with the same verve that they had earlier. They knew they were the better side, and it wasn’t close.

Even the substitutes weren’t spared the venom of an angry home support, with Jesse Lingard having to warm up in front of a section of Manchester United fans.

Lingard reveals all

In the hours since the game, however, Lingard has revealed what was said. Taking to his Twitter account to defuse the situation, he said that the fan told him to “work harder”, to which he replied, “I’m not even on the pitch”.

In the wake of such a disappointing result for the Red Devils, Lingard may find himself on the pitch more often as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tricky games against Manchester City and Tottenham to come. He must find a winning formula, or it feels like his time is up.
