Jesse Lingard explains Gareth Southgate role in West Ham switch

Jesse Lingard explains Gareth Southgate role in West Ham switch

Lingard joins West Ham

Jesse Lingard has enjoyed something of a career revival over the last few months.

The 28-year-old majorly struggled for any sort of regular action with Manchester United over the first half of the campaign.

He notched just three appearances for the Red Devils, all of which came in cup competitions.

As a result, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when United allowed Lingard to depart Old Trafford on loan during the winter window.

What has since proven surprising, though, is just how impressive the midfielder has looked with West Ham.

In just seven league outings for David Moyes’ outfit, Lingard has notched five goals and three assists.

Lingard on Southgate

Such fine form has seen Lingard recalled to the England squad for the first time since June of 2019.

And, in a recent interview, the creative midfielder opened up on the role Gareth Southgate actually played in his loan move to West Ham.

According to Lingard, despite not playing for the Three Lions, he kept in touch with the England boss, to get advice.

He went on to reveal that Southgate advised him to stay in the Premier League, which of course led to Lingard joining West Ham:

“He’s shown a lot of support and belief in me, he gave me my England debut, which I’m proud of.

“I still kept in contact with him even though I wasn’t playing, just to get his advice on what I should do.

“It was just about the right move, whether it was going out to Europe or staying in the Premier League.

“He said, ‘If I was you, I would stay in the Premier League’. After that, it was about finding a Premier League side and West Ham fitted in perfectly.”
