Twenty years after their first guest appearance at the Copa América, Japan are back and hoping for a decent run in Brazil.

Back in 1999, the Samurai Blue only amassed one point and were eliminated in the group stages.

They should do better this time.

However, Head Coach Hajime Moriyasu has named a young squad with the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan the focus.

18 of his 23 squad members are currently 22 or younger meaning they would be eligible for the Olympics next year.

However, they do have goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima (88 caps) and Shinji Okazaki (116) to add experience.

They’ll face three tough group games starting here.

Chile are the two time back to back reigning and defending Copa América Champions.

However, they come into this tournament a mess.

They failed to qualify for the World Cup last year after collapsing in CONMEBOL qualifying.

Their core players, Gary Medel, Gonzalo Jara, Mauricio Isla, Jean Beausejour, Arturo Vidal, Charles Aránguiz and Alexis Sánchez are now all over 30.

They all peaked together 3-4 years ago when they won back to back Copas but are now past their best.

It looks highly unlikely that this ageing squad will retain their title next month but they should at least reach the knockout stages.

All of that makes this a tough game to predict and one that could go either way in São Paulo.

Experience may just win the day.
