Jamie Redknapp slams Rafa Benitez’s decision to allow Dwight Gayle to leave Newcastle on loan

After Newcastle’s game vs Brighton over the weekend, Jamie Redknapp has been criticising Rafa Benitez for allowing Dwight Gayle to leave Newcastle on loan.

‘Newcastle struggled in front of goal once again in their home defeat by Brighton’

Writing in his Daily Mail column, Redknapp stated:

“Why on earth did Newcastle let Dwight Gayle go on loan to West Brom? While his replacement Salomon Rondon has not scored in the league, Gayle has eight goals in his last 10 league games.

“Newcastle struggled in front of goal once again in their home defeat by Brighton and the players must be running out of patience with Rafa Benitez.

“Newcastle’s players are not as bad as results and performances suggest. But they are being hamstrung by their manager’s negative tactics.”

Former Stoke City player Matthew Etherington has also had his say on Newcastle’s striking options:

“At Newcastle; when you’re bringing Joselu on [against Brighton]. Who I know from his time at Stoke and I’ve seen quite a lot. That’s just not the answer for getting you 10, 15 or 20 goals to keep you in this division.

“I think those teams that are struggling in forward areas, those teams who don’t have a No 9 who will get the goals for them, are the ones in trouble.”

Newcastle’s winless run continues vs Brighton

Before Newcastle took on Brighton on Saturday they had gone eight league games without a win.

However, an argument could be made that their fixture list had been very harsh.

In their first eight league games, Newcastle had already had to square off with the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham.

But heading into the game vs Brighton, Newcastle had no excuse for not picking up a win.

The Magpies were at home and facing a side that does not have obvious amounts of quality.

However, Beram Kayal would give Brighton the lead in the 29th minute and that is how the game would finish.

As a result, Newcastle and Benitez look to be in serious trouble this season.
