Jamie Carragher vs Alan Shearer: Liverpool accused of not trying to beat Wolves

Alan Shearer on Liverpool after Wolves

Wolves versus Liverpool was a big live event for the BBC on Monday night in the FA Cup.

Alan Shearer was one of the pundits on the show as Wolves knocked Liverpool out the cup.

Jurgen Klopp made wholesale changes to Liverpool’s XI for the cup tie.

Stars like Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk were given the night off, while Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino were named on the bench.

Goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves steered Wolves in the fourth round.

The result prompted questions about Jurgen Klopp’s XI, and whether Liverpool threw the game.

Alan Shearer voiced his opinion that Liverpool didn’t give the Wolves game a real go:

They’ve got a very big squad and when you rotate as he (Klopp) did, you’re gambling and you’re looking to your players saying: ‘Come on, give me something here. Give me a performance.’

When pressed on his criticisms of Liverpool on social media, Shearer has been clearer on his belief Liverpool didn’t try to win the Wolves game.

Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool centre-half, has also taken to social media to discuss Klopp’s XI at Molineux.

Carragher has been far more supportive of the German’s selection.

The Sky Sports pundit sees no problem with Klopp prioritising the Premier League and Champions League above the FA Cup.

Interestingly, Carragher has also had a side swipe at Alan Shearer.

Carragher has ‘liked’ the following tweet which pushed Shearer about Blackburn’s record in cup competitions the year Rovers won the Premier League title.
