A deadly partnership

Wayne Rooney was among the scorers in Manchester United’s 3-1 win at Bournemouth on Sunday. That didn’t spare him from criticism, though, with a large section of United fans lamenting the fact that the goal masked another poor performance. The stats don’t back up the claims, however.

Plus, according to pundits, Rooney can still be very effective.

On his return to Monday Night Football, Gary Neville was in agreement with Jamie Carragher about a potential partnership at Old Trafford. It concerns where Paul Pogba fits into Jose Mourinho’s team. Both pundits believe that a partnership between the Frenchman and Rooney would prove devastating.

The pair would play ahead of a holding midfielder.

Rooney the midfielder

But hold on a second. Wasn’t the whole point of buying Pogba so that United wouldn’t be forced to play Rooney in midfield. Didn’t Mourinho say he wouldn’t be played in midfield? Let’s look at the quote: “Maybe he is not a striker, not a No 9 anymore but for me he will never be a No 6, playing 50 metres from the goal. You can tell me his pass is amazing but my pass is also amazing without pressure. To be there and put the ball in the net is the most difficult thing. For me he will be a 9, a 10, a nine and a half but never a 6 or even an 8.”

Okay, maybe there’s some wiggle room there but it still feels as though Rooney is being carried.
