While Arsenal fans might be resigned to losing Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer, one man is desperate for him to stay in North London.
The Welshman’s former midfielder partner, Jack Wilshere, insists the 27-year-old would be a huge loss for the Gunners if he leaves next summer.
“For me he’s a future Arsenal captain”
Desperate for the two parties to resolve their issues, the now former Arsenal midfielder believes Ramsey still has plenty to offer.
Speaking to The Islington Gazette earlier in the week, Wilshere insists Ramsey is the perfect candidate to be Arsenal’s new captain.
“He’s [Ramsey] grown up to be a great player with Arsenal. They could do with someone like him. We know what he can do for the club.
“For me he’s a future Arsenal captain. I know he loves the club. It’s difficult for me to comment on because I’m not there but I do know he’s a great player – if it was me I know I would want to keep him around.
“He’s a great guy to have around. He’s been at the club so long and knows it inside out. If you look at what he’s done for the club too.”
Wilshere ended his 17-year stay at Arsenal over the summer.
Not receiving assurances over his position under new boss Unai Emery, the 26-year-old signed a three-year deal with West Ham.
Wilshere made four appearances for the Hammers before picking up an ankle injury last month.
Clearly holding his former teammate in high regard, Wilshere also added that he believes the Wales international could get into any Premier League side.
“I think you’ve got to look at the situation and ask: ‘How many top teams in the Premier League and elsewhere could he get in?’ And you’d have to say them all – and that speaks volumes about the type of player he is.”
Arenal and Ramey’s contract standoff
While Wilshere may hope that Ramsey will stay in North London, it seems increasingly likely the 27-year-old will be on his way out.
Although it was thought Ramsey was hoping to extend his decade-long stay at Arsenal, the club had a change of heart.
Despite offering the 56-cap Wales international a new deal, Arsenal recently withdrew the contract.
During his time at the Emirates, Ramsey has made over 200 appearances across all competitions.
He has also won three FA Cups, scoring the winner in both 2014 and 2017.
A firm fan favourite, the former Cardiff man was named Arsenal’s Player of the Season last year.
The midfielders current contract runs out at the end of the season.
As of January 1st, Ramsey will have the option to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign side.
