Former Chelsea player Frank Lampard has claimed Jack Wilshere has to make sure he stays fit and impresses Gareth Southgate from now until the end of the season.
In Lampard’s view, Wilshere is more than capable of going to Russia with the rest of the England squad, and can go on a run of form from now until the end of the season that will all but convince Southgate to include him in the squad – and spoke about his own experience during Euro 2004.
He wrote in his Standard Sport column:
It was unfortunate he missed the last two friendlies through injury, but I believe a run of form will get Wilshere on the plane. In terms of games left in the season, there is still a long way to go and a lot can happen.
Just look at Dele Alli. There was a lot of talk about his England place last week and now it’s changed because of what he did against Chelsea.
It’s up for grabs for everybody. For example, ahead of Euro 2004, I’d hardly played an England game, but I finished the campaign well at Chelsea and ended up starting in Portugal. That was great timing for me.
Jack will know that he is one of the players who is a question mark for the World Cup. His injury issues have put him in that bracket.
But on talent alone and the way he’s played this season, then I think he will make the squad because he offers a continuity in midfield that England are not flushed with. He likes to get on the ball and keep possession.
Of course, before Wilshere even thinks about going to the World Cup, he still has plenty to do for Arsenal before the season is over.
The Gunners are in the Europa League and know that winning it is their only chance of getting back into the Champions League – and Wilshere will be key to that.
The player is also negotiating a new deal with the Gunners, and knows the better his form is and the more he can avoid injury, the more chance he has of being offered the terms he wants and to have things sorted out as soon as possible, so he can focus on England this summer.
