What could have been for United and Perisic
Inter Milan star Ivan Perisic has explained why he rejected a move to Manchester United in the summer when Jose Mourinho tried to sign him.
The Croatian impressed at the World Cup with his national side, making it all the way to the final in Russia.
He was an integral part of that and after he returned home, there was already talk of a big transfer.
Manchester United were linked with a move for the player and Jose Mourinho prepared for the new season.
However, a move never came to fruition and the player remained at the San Siro.
Now, the player has admitted that there was an offer and he was close to leaving Inter.
However, he decided to stay put due to Luciano Spalletti’s persistence.
“Spalletti’s perseverance to keep me played a big role”
Speaking about a summer move, Perisic did reveal he was close to leaving.
Though, while he was flattered by interest from Mourinho, he would have a big role under Spalletti.
“It’s true that an offer from Manchester United was on the table and I was close to leaving Inter,” he explained, as quoted by the Mirror.
“But I decided to stay and, as I said, Spalletti’s perseverance to keep me played a big role.
“In football, small details in these situations are key.
“Admiration from a coach like Mourinho is definitely something that flattered me.
“It’s confirmation of hard work and good performances.
“When you’re praised by a guy like Mourinho – the manager of a huge club like Manchester United – it’s difficult not to think about such an offer.
“I’m glad he has a high opinion of me and these things motivate me to work hard and train hard, to achieve the best performances.”

The tables could be turned in the summer.
That is because Inter are looking to sign Manchester United’s Ashley Young.
