‘It’s not offside’ – Ryan Mason slams VAR over disallowed Harry Kane strike vs Leeds

‘It’s not offside’ – Ryan Mason slams VAR over disallowed Harry Kane strike vs Leeds

Interim Tottenham boss Ryan Mason has become the latest Premier League tactician to take aim at the VAR system, on the back of his side’s defeat to Leeds United.

Bamford & Rodrigo on target

Mason and co. were of course back in action earlier this afternoon.

The Lilywhites made the trip to Elland Road, for a Premier League meeting with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.

Spurs headed into proceedings aware that nothing but a 3-point haul would suffice, in their bid to keep the club’s fading top-4 hopes alive.

When all was said and done in west Yorkshire, however, not only did the visitors fall short of a victory, but they didn’t even manage to come away with a share of the spoils.

A fine Leeds display eventually saw the Peacocks emerge on the right side of a 3-1 scoreline, to climb back up to 9th in the Premier League table.

Stuart Dallas opened the afternoon’s scoring inside 15 minutes, before further strikes from Patrick Bamford and substitute Rodrigo ensured that Heung-min Son’s first-half equaliser proved little more than a consolation:

‘It’s not offside’

The eventual outcome this afternoon, however, could so easily have proven different, had Tottenham not seen what looked set to be a go-ahead goal ruled out.

Midway through the first-half, Harry Kane was slipped through one-on-one, before dinking a typically cool finish beyond the onrushing Illan Meslier.

The English international’s strike, however, was quickly checked by VAR, before being ruled out for the most marginal of offside calls imaginable:

But, as outlined above, one individual who remains of the opinion that Kane, despite the call, was in fact onside, is Spurs boss Ryan Mason.

Speaking in the aftermath of his side’s damaging defeat, the ex-Lilywhites midfielder hit out at those in the VAR booth at Stockley Park, confirming he was ‘shocked’ by the goal being ruled out:

‘At 1-1 there was an offside decision and I’m shocked. I don’t think it was right. People don’t understand momentum in football and how those decisions can affect you.’

‘I’ve seen it back. My first look, second look and 10th look tell me that it’s not offside. At 1-1 it’s a big moment. In my opinion they got that one wrong.’
