Every Dutch Eredivisie fixture in the 2017/18 season will have a video referee.
The decision is a massive step forward (or backward, depending on your point of view) for technology in the game.
Such technology has been trialled at the Club World Cup and in the Australian league but this will be the first time it’s a permanent fixture in a top European division.
The video referee will help the on-field referee and his assistants with offside calls and penalty decisions.
While the video referee will definitely help reduce errors, critics of the move cite disruption to the flow of the game as its main flaw.
Furthermore, there are some decisions that are so difficult to call that even a video referee won’t be able to get them right.
